Gulf-style Emergency Housing Begins to Appear

A tiny home with big windows and a front porch made a big splash at the International Builders Show in Orlando, says a press release from the Congress for New Urbanism, but that Katrina Cottage is just first of planned emergency houses that hold true to Gulf Coast cultural and architectural tradiitons. The Builders Show helped Katrina Cottage supporters find manufacturers who could cooperate in production of large numbers of the 308-square-foot homes. A plan book of other small, affordable home designs based on a Gulf Coast vernacular will be available soon. Also, in Pearlington, Mississippi, some temporary homes being constructed by Habitat for Humanity are versions of a builder's standard affordable home designs, adapted to be faithful to local vernacular.
